Stop wondering what the ref just did. Here's what every signal, score, and overtime situation means — by age and style.

Common Hand Signals

Score

Two Fingers Up

2-point takedown or reversal

Ref raises 2 fingers toward the scoring wrestler's color.

Three Fingers Up

3-point near fall (or folkstyle takedown)

Three fingers held up on the scoring side.

4-point near fall / freestyle exposure takedown

Sudden Victory & Tiebreakers

Folkstyle (Youth)

  1. 11. 1-minute sudden victory — first point wins.
  2. 22. If still tied: two 30-second tiebreakers — wrestler with more total points wins.
  3. 33. Still tied: 30-second ultimate tiebreaker, choice of position to top scorer of period 1.

Folkstyle (HS / College)

  1. 11. 1-minute sudden victory.
  2. 22. Two 30-second tiebreaker periods (one each on bottom).
  3. 33. 30-second ultimate ride-out by choice of first scorer.

Freestyle / Greco

  1. 1No sudden victory — match is won on criteria if tied at the buzzer.
  2. 2Criteria order: most high-value scores → fewest cautions → last point scored.
  3. 3The wrestler who scored the LAST point typically wins a tied match.

Team scoring

Dual Meet Team Points

In a dual meet, the result of each individual match converts to team points based on the style and margin of victory. First team to score the most across all weight classes wins the dual.

Technical Fall

15-point lead achieved (e.g., 15-0, 18-3). Match ends early.
Major Decision
4 pts
Win by a margin of 8–14 points at the end of regulation.
Decision
3 pts
Win by a margin of 1–7 points at the end of regulation.
